Academic Harold Bertot Triana Presents Critical Analysis of the International Criminal Court at Prestigious Serbian Conference

PALIĆ, Serbia – June 16, 2025 – Harold Bertot Triana, a member of the academic module and Professor of International Law, delivered a keynote presentation at the 25th Traditional International Scientific Conference of the International Criminal Law Association, held from June 13-16, 2025, at the Students Resort "Palić". The event played an important role in the organizational work of the members of the Aleksa Škundrić and Ivana Miljuš Module

His paper, titled “International Immunities and Non-Party States to ICC Statute: Standardizing an Exorbitant Jurisdiction in the Name of ‘International Justice’?”, contributed to the high-level debate within the conference's central theme, "Challenges of International Criminal Law and Criminal Law." The presentation was part of the working session "III) PAPERS WRITTEN IN ENGLISH," which featured leading international experts.

Bertot's presentation critically examined the jurisdictional reach of the International Criminal Court (ICC) over nationals of states that are not parties to the Rome Statute. His analysis delved into the complex legal tension between the pursuit of international justice and the principles of state sovereignty and diplomatic immunities, questioning whether the Court's practice risks establishing an "exorbitant jurisdiction."

The conference was inaugurated by prominent figures, including Prof. Dr. Milenko Kreća, President of the International Criminal Law Association, Snežana Marković, President of the Constitutional Court of Serbia, and Nenad Vujić, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Serbia. The event served as a major forum for legal scholars, judges, and practitioners to address contemporary challenges in criminal law, with sessions covering topics from the reform of Serbian criminal law and the rule of law to the impact of artificial intelligence on criminal liability.
