During the international seminar Advances and Setbacks of Democracy in the European Space, Xulio Ferreiro Baamonde discussed the role of algorithmic design in criminal justice systems. He examined the increasing use of automated decision-making tools and their potential impact on democratic governance, particularly regarding transparency, accountability, and procedural safeguards in judicial and law-enforcement contexts.

Ferreiro Baamonde, Full Professor of Procedural Law at the University of A Coruña since 2012 and Dean of the Faculty of Law at UDC since 2021, warned that algorithmic systems may undermine democratic values and due process if implemented without adequate oversight. He emphasized the need for clear regulatory frameworks, human supervision, and institutional safeguards to ensure that technological innovation in criminal justice respects fundamental rights and maintains procedural guarantees.
